Why we chose this story
We chose this story after playing the refugee game on the EO site. We thought it was interesting due all the sides of the story possible and the story should offer a view that it is not simple finding a boat and getting into Europe. We also wanted to portray in the story that there are many dangers when going to Europe and we think that with this story we have shown quite a few of these dangers. We chose Syria as the starting position due to this being a very recent war-torn country.

Link between our story and human rights
Our story clearly links with the fact that people die because we in Europe don’t let them in very easily. Therefore people try it in dangerous ways, for example by boat, there are smugglers who do this, but often the boats aren’t safe or the smuggler even leaves them to die in the middle of the ocean, this is of course against human rights. Also the fact that people who for example fake passports take advantage of the people in need is not very ethical. Furthermore families are getting torn apart, in our case Ibrahim’s little brother died, which is devastating for the families.
Also the Human Rights Watch states that it defends the rights of refugees. Though even despite their efforts they can’t help all of them. They try to prevent people being forced to return to their country, because they are in danger there. But as shown in our story, most of the time refugees are not certain at all, even if they reach Europe, of a safe life. |
